Ophthalmology is the speciality that concerns medical and surgical conditions of the eye. Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure undertaken in the NHS and can be performed either under local or general anaesthetic.

Checklist for Cataract Surgery

The development of the Checklist for Cataract Surgery has been a collaborative project between the NPSA and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. It is adapted from the NPSA Safer Surgical Checklist to ensure relevance to ophthalmology so that all the key clinical risks in this environment are addressed. It should be used for all patients having a cataract procedure. It addresses speciality specific questions such as the availability and model of lens implant to be used.
